YOVASO, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, Virginia State Police, and Virginia Department of Transportation, is launching the Youth Traffic Safety Slogan Contest!
This statewide contest gives students the opportunity to create a traffic safety message that could be seen by drivers across Virginia. The winning slogan will be displayed on VDOT interstate message signs statewide during National Teen Driver Safety Week, October 18–24.
Who Can Participate?
The contest is ONLY open to YOVASO participating schools — any school that has participated in a YOVASO program within the past two years.
Students can participate individually, through their YOVASO club, or as part of their school.
Each participating school may submit unlimited entries!
Students do not have to be active members of their school’s YOVASO club to participate. As long as the student or submitting group is affiliated with a qualifying YOVASO participating school, they are eligible.
Contest Timeline
Contest Launch: August 10
Submission Deadline: September 4
Winner Announced: October 12
Winning Slogan Displayed: October 18–24
The winning slogan will be displayed on VDOT interstate message signs statewide during National Teen Driver Safety Week.
Your slogan should:
- Focus on a traffic safety topic or behavior, such as speeding, distracted driving, or seat belt use.
- Include a clear action for drivers to follow.
- Be easy to read and understand in a quick glance.
- Be appropriate and understandable for all ages.
- Be creative! Humor and wordplay are encouraged.
Slogan Requirements:
3 lines maximum
16 characters maximum per line
Spaces and punctuation count toward the character limit.
What Should You Avoid?
Slogans should not be vague, confusing, insulting, or threatening.
Do not use:
- Emojis
- Hashtags
- Special symbols
- Slang or texting language that may be difficult to understand
Prize:
The winning slogan will be displayed on VDOT interstate message signs across Virginia during National Teen Driver Safety Week!
The winning student and/or school will also receive statewide recognition through social media and partner agency communications.
