The 2016 YOVASO Middle School Retreat was a great success! It was held Friday, October 21 at Central Academy Middle School in Botetourt County. The theme for the retreat was “Operation YOVASO: Drive to Save Lives.” Students from Bedford Middle School, Staunton River Middle School, Forest Middle School, and Central Academy Middle School were in attendance. While at the retreat, students learned the importance of being a safe passenger as well as pedestrian and bike safety! The retreat also prepared students and sponsors to work in their peer-to-peer clubs to promote traffic safety in their schools and communities.
Activities and sessions at the retreat were educational and fun and encouraged teamwork and collaboration. At this year’s retreat, students and sponsors participated in a variety of hands-on and interactive outdoor activities including a vehicle extrication by local fire and rescue, seat belt and airbag deployment demonstration, as well as a bomb squad demonstration by the Virginia State Police. Schools also had free time to meet and begin action planning for the upcoming school year.
This annual fall retreat is FREE, including meals and materials. For more information or questions, please contact Sarah Westphal.
